Hotels and Interiors Photography
From the Isle of Skye to as far south as Teignmouth I have photographed a wide range of interiors.
I have been in some lovely properties over the years from small high quality guests houses and bed and breakfasts, to self catering, a number of hotels and a fabulous £1.6m penthouse in Edinburgh. I also covered a high spec office interiors for a property development company based in Edinburgh.
I’ll photograph some of the big spaces from different angles and where there a good views from windows I may take several shots on a tripod and then combine 3 into one image so that the light is balanced between the inside and brighter light through the windows.
Known as HDR (High Dynamic Range) it’s important to keep it as real looking as possible.
Our eyes and brains working together are astonishing components at seeing the range of light and focus points – even the most expensive cameras just can’t match that “out of the box”. So a bit of tweaking in Photomatix or using layers in Photoshop will max out the dynamic light range available from 2-3 or more images taken at different exposures.
Ex-Hotelier…. I had a previous career over some 30 years in the hotel industry, latterly running three 4 and 5 star boutique hotels in Edinburgh. This background means that I understand the workings of the hotel busness and do my best to work with operators in recognising their day to day needs with their guests and staff.

Cullin Hills Hotel – Skye
Late summer in 2017 brought changes of weather over a 2 day shoot but it allowed some nice blue sky shots as well some more dreich weather.
The views from the hotel are pretty specatcular and I was facinated by the varied outlook as the weather changed so much and helped with the vistas from the restaurant.
This is a office ‘plate’ that they took on for a major Scottish investment firm. Basically they start with the office space as a shell and build the walls, screens and floor to ceiling glass dividers around open plan space. The fit out from what I observe is of high class quality fittings and interior design.
Sundial Properties, Edinburgh
Commissioned by a luxury property development firm, I was asked to photograph an apartment, which used to be offices, for its sale as a £1.6m penthouse in central Edinburgh.
Photographed over 3 seasons as the client wanted to convey the changing panorama from the 360 degree views. So several visits at sunrise and sunset through autumn and into winter and early snows produced some pretty stunning shots.

Millsyde Cottage, Kelso
Sue Beck runs Hendersyde Farm self catering cottages. She proudly has 3 farm cottages and built a fabulous cottage about half a mile from the main farm house and buildings.
Let as a luxury cottage is it just wonderful and from the photos you can see it’s design and spec is second to none – absolute quality and attention to detail. That’s Sue!
So I was delighted to spend a day there to photograph it just before it opened.
11 Brunswick Street, Edinburgh
11 Brunswick is a really smart and contemporary 10 guest room boutique hotel just off the city center of Edinburgh.
The owners have done a wonderful job with the rooms, bathrooms and a airy brasserie with a real ‘arty’ feel to it.
I have been several times to shoot the rooms as well as updating their food photography and they are always adding touches and refining the product.
The Place, Edinburgh
The Place is a contemporary hotel opened in 2012 in York Place.
They were just about to open but items of furniture and small fittings were still arriving at the hotel. However they needed images in order to improve their on line presence and marketing.
Made.com pop-up in Edinburgh
Got a shout from Made.com the furniture and soft furnishings company
21 Hanover St, Edinburgh
Lovely set of 3 apartments in Edinburgh’s Hanover Street.
Set just a minute from Princess Street 21 Hanover St is so close to all of Edinburgh’s city center activity and attractions. It was a pleasure to photograph the interiors of this property for Susan Wolff.
Kirkbank House, Paxton
Superb personalised guest house in the little village of Paxton in the Scottish Borders. The couple who own it have collected lovely ornaments and nick-nacks from their travels.
